Day 6: Number through Measurement.

 Number through Measurement:

Session 3: Number Strings - Number Talks.

These number strings look really good. I can see how useful they will be and am definately going to use them in my classroom very soon. It is a way to reinforce patterns and see connections.

Session 4: Focus on Measurement

Vocab charts are useful when designed by the students.
- Not so useful as just a retrieval chart.

This is an interesting maths talk  about measurement.
Link it to real life.
How much we use it in every day life?

They need hands on tools for measurement to make it real. So they can understand and picture things!!

Always estimate before measuring!!!!

The need to use benchmarks.
e.g. a big step is about a metre, so roughly how long is our classroom.

Check our the "Key Ideas for Teaching and Learning Measurement"

How Measurement rich is our class Environment?

Shared Books.

This was a good reminder to make sure there is plenty of measurement available in the class room for learning during maths lessons but also incidental learning as things come up.
A good reminder to use picture books/ sophisticated picture books to  introduce, teach and reinforce maths concepts.

Session 5: Connecting Number and Measurement:
Multiplicative thinking.

Multiplicative thinking is not the problem  - it is how you solve the problem!

Different process to use to work out multiplication - Getting increasingly difficult.

Arrays - very important as a visual.
The see the connection and will help to seeing skip counting as useful which leads to multiplication.

Build up to repeated addition using known facts.

Multiplicative partitioning.
Using known facts.
Partition off what you know first then add on extra groups.

Rounding and compensating.

Session 6:
Length. Perimeter, Area

Session 7:
Volume and Capacity.

Session 8:
Angles and Triangles

Bench Marks - pop up again.
Love bench marks!!

One of my big take aways from today is to establish a good set of bench marks for the kids.
This helps with their estimation.
Estimation comes up again as a really important skill for the tamariki.

So - I will be introducing benchmarks and using them regularly.

  1. Kia ora Trina,
Estimation is very important and very strongly emphasized in the new curriculum. It is also something that needs to be taught. Having benchmarks is a big support to help students to estimate. Books in mathematics are so important to build literacy and vocabulary and there are so many great ones. I loved seeing Zana walk out the door this week with 2 in her bag to use in her class. A little bit of influence from me.
Everyday life and maths examples are very important to give purpose and meaning.
    Thanks for the great reflection.
