What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Ubiquitous Learning
Ubiquitous Learning Slides

Anytime, any where, any place.

Spend the first term getting kids use to routines.
How find the site, book mark.
set up documents with name etc.
Previous ways of teaching have not been thrown out the window.

Free teacher up to give instructions quite quickly then this allows for more time for the teacher to roam and spend more time with the children.
No reason for kids to miss out or get left behind.

Comparing low decile children with high decile students.
30,000,000 less words at beginning of school.

Resources extending beyond the school day. More opportunities to engage with learning.

Summer slump - children can post while on holidays. Children who maintain their blog posts over the summer.

Technology is about the removal of barriers.
If its worth teaching - its worth capturing.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I sat the google educator Level 1 Exam today and...

The learning will be ubiquitous as they will be able to access this learning any time, any place and any where!!

Apps to explore on Chrome
Screen castify
WeVideo
Pixiclip
Explain E
Movenote
FlipGrid

Apps to explore on ipads
Showme

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

DFI -Week 8 - Computational Thinking

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Dorothy
Empowered learners and empowered teachers.
If you empower yourself it is obvious that the learners will benefit.
It is NOT just a tool.
digital empowerment must empower everyone.
Article presented by Nigel Latta - online.

article about "the working poor" - working all hours of the day and night and still not have enough
to provide for your family.

Social housing - disempowerment.

Mean academic performance of a 3 year old.
Motor coordination
oral language
all types of growth and development

5 years olds from high decile type families hears 32,000,000 more words than children from lower socio development, cognitive development,
backwards and forwards talking between child and carer.

one third turn over.

It is the backwards and forwards discussion that is important.
you can set up situations to get them to talk back and forward.

Blogging helps with the back and forward. when people respond they respond and continue a conversation.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
The remove background website is awesome! My friends were using it today and showed me how it works. Thanks for your help Rachael.
It will save so much time in the future when helping my students make images to share.

We got to experiment with various types technology e.g. Stratch, robots, stop motion with green screen and mini models of trees and dinosaurs, and a virtual reality simulator. It let me see different ways that we can use technology to help children tell and share their stories and ideas.
After having a 'play' today i feel more confident to use these types of technologies in the future.
I loved the virtual reality and even though i cant see myself using it with my learners in the near future my eyes have been opened to how it can be used in a creative way.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

This 3D model app looks amazing. It was such a creative way to make a model. I could even see inside of it. These can lead to 3D printing.

3D Model App.

This Stop Motion App was really easy to use and I could see how it would really engage learners in their story telling. I loved using it and it was so simple to use. It would be a good way for tamariki to tell a story and share with others.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Wakelet looks like a good way to keep and file ideas.

DFI Week 7 - Media

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
Connected
Dorothy Google hangout: Connect with other schools in a way that is not just competing.
Shared language. Language is simple but the complexity beneath is deep.
Trying to become expert/ fluent in the Manaiakalani language pedagogy and kaupapa.
Sharing and connected go together.
If you don't share you are not connected.

Tuhi Mai Tuhi atu.
A way for classes to share. Google hangouts, blogs etc.

Cant connect with someone who is not prepared to make them selves visible.
Sites and learning on sites need to be visible.

Ted Talk about why we are wired to connect.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Kent showed us how to live stream on you tube.
It looks really cool but would be alot to purchase the equipment to do it.

If you look to the right of the screen you will see an introduction that I have made to share on my blog.

I learn how to embed a you tube playlist on my class site.

This afternoon I went through the 5 minute Google site challenge. It took me about 10 minutes but I know that I could do it again in about 5!!

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I am very proud of this first animation that I have made!!!
This will be something that I could use with my learners. They would love to tell stories this way.

I started using google draw to make a portrait of myself. It was a long process so I got this far.
It was good to remember how to use the colour picker.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

I would use You tube play lists and will upload videos to youtube so it is easy to share on my site.

DFI Week 6 - Devices

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
Chat with Dorothy:
Cybersmart Slides
Moved from poster on the wall to being more proactive.
Analogy of a powerful tool - a car - would not be put in the hands of a 15 year old with no practise - absorb from driver.
in 2011 we gave children a high powered device with full access to internet and poster on the wall.  Crazy!! Most was negative, scaremongering and unhelpful. Full of don'ts.

Looked at programmes - Cybersmart. Using positive words.
Teach them to be cybersmart from 5y of age.
Need to teach them what they must do - not what they must not do.

Need to integrate cybersmart into all lessons.

Flip it to the positive.
Like use the word kindness - not anti bullying.

The cyber smart  site is really useful and one that i will be going back to to use with my learners in the future.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Hapara looks like an amazing tool. I have not used Hapara in my class as i have New Entrants. One day when i teach older students I am looking forward to exploring this tool and learning how to use it to its full potential.

Explain everything app looks good too. I was not convinced but now i can see that it would be useful in the class.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Khismira did a session on how to set up ipads before the year starts to get it all running smoothly.
She showed us how to use the explain everything app. This looks like a good app.

Here is a very simple video showing me using the super fine snipping tool and the microphone app.

I also learnt how to use the screen castify extension.
It will be really useful for rewindable learning for my students.
It was not hard to use once i got used to it.
Here is my attempt.
I love the spotlight pointer!!!

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

The screen castify app would be fun to use if i was teaching my friends about something new that i had learnt on this course and wanted to share with them. Much easier than typing it all out.
Google drive is amazing - so good to have all my work in one spot no matter what device i am using.

DFI Week 5 - Enabling Access

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Dorothy:
Enabling Access:
Visibility: important part of kaupapa. Be prepared to embrace being visible.
Traditionally education tended to keep learning journey hidden.
Turned learning into a maze experience. some people can get through it. Not all.
Success - ability to read the teachers mind. Anticipate the teachers intentions. Give the responses that the teachers want.

Cultural capital begins in the home. How you succeed at school. Kids understand what success looks like at school. Road map of what it is that makes you successful at school.

Day to day planning needs to be visible.
Success criteria etc.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

About a Google site:
Be aware that the front page of site is like a shop window.
It needs to entice students and parents in.
It should speak for itself.

Goals for Class site.
Make sure my site is useful for year 0 and 1 students (as well as whanau)

Start doing this today:
Tidy up the site and make it look better.
Check out what my site looks like on an ipad.
Add more activities that the children can do on the ipad from the site.

Add more detail to site.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
We learnt about Google sites. Here is a look at my new look Pukeko Class site.

Click here to view: Pukeko Class Site

Looked at other schools websites to see how they make their learning visible for Year 0 and Year 1 on line.
Some use google slides for the children to find their work for the day or week. I will investigate this and see if this might work for my class.
I need to have more on my site!!
More rewindable learning and pages they can follow up with at home.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Now that i know how to use and make a google site I will be able to have the site up to date and add to it regularly. Hopefully this will mean that i spend less of my time working on this.
I am learning alot from the DFI course in general that helps me often in my daily life.
Thanks.

DFI Week 4 - Collaborate sites

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

We started the day with Dorothy via hang out. She was talking about the Share part of the Manaiakalani kaupapa.
This is what i heard...
We have been sharing since time began.
Good time and bad.
Creating and sustaining relationships.
Mode has changed over centuries.
We share in a huge variety of ways.
Biggest change - social media - speed and amplification.
Sharing your lives with other people - making connections and sharing.

My Question is - Are we really more connected with each other when using with social media?

Manaiakalani - decided to harness social media as a hook for good that can be leveraged.

"Work with learners to establish an authentic audience for their learning outcomes."

Add another feature - not getting rid of all the things that already work e.g. taking book to principle, assembly etc.

Ways to share:

With one another, the class, the school, the local community and now.... go global - beyond the local community.
Sharing with purpose - Audience.
Authentic audience.  People who CHOOSE to listen to you.

Why use Blogger?
Resembles the spaces where they want to be.
Secure
Largest audience
Multi purposed
Can be used by learners and teachers.
Latest post on the top.

Cybersmart curriculum - good support.

Kaupapa : Learn create share.     And..   Share to learn.   Share to FINISH learning.
Sharing is the start of new learning -

Links to John Hattie - the importance of feedback and feedforward.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Multi Modal - what we mean when we use this term

An inclusive, differentiated approach to teaching in a digital learning environment.
Your site is like a shop window. Is it getting people involved and interested?
Is it engaging? e.g. Teachers creating a movie to hook kids onto their learning.
Needs to be fresh on the home page. Like a road map about where you are going.

Universal Design for Learning:
Even with technology we can still fall into the one size fits all issue. One app for all kids.
In terms of supporting students learning this is not useful. They are all different.
Universal design for learning - acknowledges variability from outset!!

3 aspects:
We are all different in How we perceive information e.g. text, visual, video etc.
What engages one learner does not necessarily engage another learner.
(the default is me - how do i learn - what will motivate me BUT the default needs to be no default
- needs to be many examples of how we present)
There is no average student.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

The website that i am creating has been started with my learners in mind.
My New Entrant and year 1 Tamariki are bug mad at the moment.
Here is a look at my website.
Creepy Crawly Critters website

Example of a page.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

As you can see from this photo I am very intense!! There was so much to learn today and my brain is very FULL!! I can imagine how tamariki feel when they are not given enough time to practise what they have learnt to really embed the learning in their brain.

DFI Week 3 - Dealing with data

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
Started off the day with a session on Create: The message i got was - It seems to be that this is not allowed for or made time for much. Has not been seen as a priority. Creating is not just creating a document but creating in ways that was not able to be done before.
Allowing young people to be creative human beings - doing things that have not been part of the traditional classroom

give an opportunity to show an understanding of their learning in different ways that was available before.

Due to unforeseen circumstances I had to leave today at morning tea because of an emergency situation. I have gone through the notes from today and have tried my best to understand what I had to do...

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

    Google forms:
    Created a form.

    Google my maps:
    Went through the map activity.
    Here is my map.
I imported data from the google form we filled in earlier in the day.
I had a play with adding layers and measuring distances etc.

    Google sheets:
Went through the activities and here is something from it.
Lauren was amazing and went through this with me - Thanks!!!
It was good. Now I need to go back and do it a few more times so I remember how to do it easily.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Mainly for me at this stage.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Google sheets will definitely help with my workflow at for work.
The maps will be very helpful with personal life too.

We added new labels to the blog.

    DFI Week 2 - Workflow

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani’s Learn kaupapa and pedagogy?

It was good to hear from Dorothy this morning.
It is interesting to hear that Manaiakalani kaupapa is Moving from analogue world to the digital world. Effective teaching is still essential and the NZ curriculum and supporting documents are still very relevant.
Any teacher who can be replaced by a computer - should be!
This slide shared by Dorothy really resonated with me.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

We did a google hang out and discussed...
What was the teaching design behind the post?
    What was the learners response?
Who responded to the post and how did it support the learning?

Here is a video of our attempt. We had to first download quick time, learn how to use quick time as well as learning about google hangout. We had a problem with the sound recording on our hangout and we could only hear one voice. Lots of learning with this session!!

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I really liked these positive sentence starter for positive, thoughtful and helpful blog comments.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

It was awesome to learn how to tidy the bookmarks bar in chrome. And great to have the time to do some of this.
I really liked learning about organising my emails etc. I had over 7000 in there and it was in much need of a sort.

DFI Week 1 - Core Business

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

It was good to hear from Dorothy this morning about the journey that the Manaiakalani leaders and community have been on. It is great to see how the Learn, Create, Share kaupapa has made a difference for so many children. It is going to be interesting and exciting to see this progress with our tamariki in the Far North.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I learnt about how much I can do on google docs. I used to find it very frustrating and seemed quite limiting but now i can see what i can do. I am looking forward to making much more appealing class newsletters and sharing information with whanau. Look at a sample poster that I created today.
Today i also set up a Google Group for our junior syndicate teachers.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Google read and write would be interesting to use.
I will definitely be using the Google Word Cloud generator.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

The explore option was awesome! I never knew the purpose of it.
It was great to finally understand what the Heading 1/ Heading 2 symbols meant in word. Also - how useful it is when formatting a longer document to keep the layout all similar and tidy. The table of contents option was an eye opener - did not know this was even possible!!
