Day 8 Statistics and Probability

Session 2: Dorothy Burt

Using real-life contexts to explore statistical concepts

Hybrid lession.

hard materials and digital.

These children described the lessons as fun.

Excellent resources for Statistical investigations.

Link with Stats and Cybersmart.
An important Subject.

Session 3: Data talks - Elena
Maths Talk
Collaborative Maths discussions:
Mathematical understanding, Critical thinking, problem solving, engaging, diverse perspectives. Zone of proximal development.
Learn from each other.

Refresh maths talks

Critical thinking and reasoning is key.

The purpose is to lay a foundation for the understanding of data, fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and an awareness of how data is a part of our daily lives.

Jo Bolar - You cubed - video

It is our moral imperative to prepare our students to make sense of data.
Seperate fact from fiction.

What are you curious about?
Have a conversation with the kids.

This kind of slide would invoke risk free conversation.

Think, reason, explain.

Session 4 - Donna Yates

Vocab

A good video

PPDAC cycle
There is no actual start point.
You can start at any stage.
You might start with some results.

Phase 1
In the last one - kids actuall bought their own toy in from home and they were used on the graph.

Variability
New term in curriculum

Variability will occur in all data set.
They will start to compare variability before they start to measure.

A good Guide for Stats

Really good resource.
Share with staff

Session 5: Statistical Investigation - Georgie

Again Vocab - Very important

Use from Year 1 on.

Can start anywhere

Lots of different ways to display data.
It is good to use multiple representations of the data.
But be aware of what is needed at each phase.

Video is good

A good website

Good site

Session 6: Lies, Lies and Statistics - Elena

Critical thinking!!!!

Very cool way to explore a graph.
Each slide adds a bit more of data.

Companies can use small differences look huge by using different displays.

Session 7: Census at School - Donna

Really good website.
Can be used for gathering data.

Primary Teacher guide - about the site.
Slide Link about the site.

Schools can add their own information to this site.
You can see your data get added.

Data cards look great!!!!
Multi-details.

Practise using 'I notice' statements.

Definitely share this site and these data cards with others at school.

Session 8: Take a Chance - Probability - Donna

Lots of fun hands on activities/ investigations that can be done in this strand.

My Summary:
It is so important especially in this day and age that tamariki can read, discuss and interpret data. Reflect on the way it is displayed. Look for any bias in the way the information is shared.
Important to use the vocab. This can easily be done throughout the day and year - not just wait for when we are teaching the Stats strand.

  1. Kia ora Trina,
Another day of lots of great resources and activities linked to the new curriculum around statistics and probability. I have always said Statistics should not be taught in maths time as it is integrated into so many other curriculum areas. It also can fit into many contexts. I agree with you in the importance of teaching children to read and interpret graphs as statistics is in everyday life and students need to be able to see it through a critical lens.
Thanks for sharing your great creative maths examples this morning.
