DFI Week 6 - Devices

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
Chat with Dorothy:
Cybersmart Slides
Moved from poster on the wall to being more proactive.
Analogy of a powerful tool - a car - would not be put in the hands of a 15 year old with no practise - absorb from driver.
in 2011 we gave children a high powered device with full access to internet and poster on the wall.  Crazy!! Most was negative, scaremongering and unhelpful. Full of don'ts.

Looked at programmes - Cybersmart. Using positive words.
Teach them to be cybersmart from 5y of age.
Need to teach them what they must do - not what they must not do.

Need to integrate cybersmart into all lessons.

Flip it to the positive.
Like use the word kindness - not anti bullying.

The cyber smart  site is really useful and one that i will be going back to to use with my learners in the future.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Hapara looks like an amazing tool. I have not used Hapara in my class as i have New Entrants. One day when i teach older students I am looking forward to exploring this tool and learning how to use it to its full potential.

Explain everything app looks good too. I was not convinced but now i can see that it would be useful in the class.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Khismira did a session on how to set up ipads before the year starts to get it all running smoothly.
She showed us how to use the explain everything app. This looks like a good app.

Here is a very simple video showing me using the super fine snipping tool and the microphone app.

I also learnt how to use the screen castify extension.
It will be really useful for rewindable learning for my students.
It was not hard to use once i got used to it.
Here is my attempt.
I love the spotlight pointer!!!

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

The screen castify app would be fun to use if i was teaching my friends about something new that i had learnt on this course and wanted to share with them. Much easier than typing it all out.
Google drive is amazing - so good to have all my work in one spot no matter what device i am using.

  1. Kia Ora Petrina; I love Hapara Dashboard! It is a very useful tool, I find it especially useful for focussing students on what they should be focussing on, or sharing links with them (although this freaked them out at first when tabs started opening, and they shut them down!).
